These plans are for the standard loft kit used in select dorms at Oregon State University. This loft kit is erected underneath the bed frame and supports the bed at approximately 5’. The bed that is currently in the dorm sits on top of this frame, which in return opens up the room and gives ample space for storage and other necessities. This design is similar to a kit sold at a local hardware store but there are some changes which allow it to be more structurally sound as well as easier to build.

Lofts are an easy way to expand a college room tremendously. It is also most often one of the cheapest ways to do so. With a little bit of planning ahead you can create your very own without much time and a little bit of effort. Most colleges often require you to use their own bed and you are often forced to build or buy a kit that fits their beds. One thing to do and think about ahead of time is to measure your room as well as the bed in order to figure out if your loft kit will fit accordingly. Our kits plans on this site are specifically measure and designed to fit in a OSU residential room.
There are several other things that may help bring your college dorm room to life. Often dorm rooms are always lacking space. One easy way to create more space is to build things into your loft kit and around it. A simple shelf mounted above the bed can create a nice compact night stand area for a light and a book. Underneath it a couch, tv, desk, or bookcase will fit nicely. Some students even put their beds up on cinder blocks to create more room. Before you try this approach make sure your school will allow you to do this. Some schools have regulations on this and you’ll quickly run into problems. This can quickly be solved by using premade bed risers which look like cones that you stand on end.
Whether it is a loft kit or a pile of cinder blocks, we hope that your college life is a fun successful time.
